ABSTRACT

In Indonesia, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has spread in the education sector. The policy issued by the central government is to dismiss all educational institutions for online learning. This study aimed to analyze English department students’ perceptions on the use of type of video in online learning in one of private universities in Yogyakarta. To find out the responses by students towards the type of video applied in their online classes, the researchers used mixed research, qualitative and quantitative research. This study involved 25 students who took the subject of Speaking Professional Context and Paragraph Writing. For data collection, the researchers used questionnaires and interviews.

The research revealed that there were several types of videos that are used as online learning media. There are Video conferencing using Zoom or Google Meet, YouTube Video and E-learning. The results of this research showed that the use of video in online learning able to improve students’ productive skills. However, the data also showed that internet connection problem cause students understanding during virtual meetings. On the other hand, they were able to follow the class well by asking for more clarification about the materials through WhatsApp group. The researcher also asked the lecturers about type of media and videos were usually used in online learning. Lecturers were answered that they used Zoom, E-learning, and assessment in the form of videos. This means that the use of video media, E-learning, and task collection in the form of videos can be applied by lecturers to teach speaking and writing classes for one semester.
