ABSTRACT
Speaking becomes a basic skill that students have to learn to communicate their ideas orally. During the Covid-19 pandemic, teaching and learning activities are required from respective homes or known as online learning. To help the students always active in speaking during online learning, English teacher needs a strategy to reach the goal of learning. In this situation, using group work as one of teaching strategies is suitable way in teaching speaking. The purpose of this research is to describe the student’s speaking ability after they were taught using group work during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It was applied to teach speaking focusing on asking and giving opinion to the eleventh-grade students of SMKN 2 Kediri. This research used pre-experimental design and quantitative approach. XI OTKP 2 consists of 36 students as the sample of this research. The researcher used oral test as the instrument to collect the data. The result of this research shows the result of oral test there were 72.2% students who get good score, 19.4% students get fair score, 8.3% students get excellent score. Based on the result of analysis, the researcher concludes that group work can be applied in online learning and the application of group work during online learning made the students more active during online learning activity. It is a suitable strategy to teach speaking during online learning.
