ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Contextual Teaching and Learning approach in class X SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Kediri. The CTL approach can improve students’ English writing skills, especially in descriptive writing. By using the CTL approach, students will easily develop story ideas because the CTL approach is an approach based on real-life contexts or in everyday life. This study uses a quantitative research method with a One-Shoot Case Study design by giving treatment then students are given a posttest in the form of writing descriptive text with a CTL approach. In this study the posttest is a research instrument to collect data. The subjects of this study were students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Kediri and the sample was taken in class X TKR, totaling 13 students. The post-test results show that the CTL approach is an effective approach used in learning to write descriptive texts and can improve students’ writing skills in developing their story ideas. The effectiveness of the CTL approach is evidenced by the posttest results of students who get the highest score of 95 with an average score of 84 and the number of students who score 75 is 85% of the 13 students. The result of the score obtained by the highest student is in scoring the “Content” criterion or developing story ideas and applying it into their project writing, in scoring this criterion all students get a score 4. The results show that the Contextual Teaching and Learning approach is an effective approach and can improve students’ writing skills.
